ASCON’s Double tower Side trimmer is purpose-built for continuous pickling lines, performing continuous edge trimming at line speeds up to 200 mpm. It removes edge defects such as cracks, burrs, scale-embedded imperfections, and waviness, while maintaining consistent strip width. The equipment is particularly suited to High Induction Boron (HiB) silicon steel pickling lines, reliably trimming strip from 1.2 to 3.0 mm thick and preparing qualified edges for downstream cold rolling and galvanizing.
Double tower Side trimmer Protects Downstream Processes
The pickling line is the first quality gate before cold rolling and galvanizing. If edge defects are not removed, cold rolling can suffer edge cracking and strip breakage, while galvanizing can experience poor zinc adhesion — leading to downgraded or scrapped coils. ASCON’s side trimmer uses precise knife gap and overlap control to deliver trimmed edges that are burr-free, crack-free, and consistent in width, helping users improve yield and first-pass quality.
Double tower Side trimmer
ASCON’s side trimmer employs a double-head cantilever rotary hybrid power shear structure. The blades are double-edged, using end-face grinding and hydraulic nut locking. This structure balances rigidity with adjustment flexibility, making it suitable for the continuous, high-speed operating conditions of a pickling line.
Automatic Adjustment for Precise Control
Opening width adjustment is driven by two oil cylinders. A servo cylinder precisely controls strip width, and the cylinder stroke ensures the adjustment range. Shear blade overlap adjustment is driven by an external absolute encoder driving a worm geared motor, which turns the knife shaft eccentric bushings through a worm gear. Shear blade side clearance adjustment is likewise driven by an external absolute encoder driving a worm geared motor, with the worm and knife-shaft sleeve connected via T-thread, moving the knife shaft sleeve through the worm gear. All three adjustments can be precisely set according to incoming strip thickness and material, meeting the stringent shear stress requirements of HiB silicon steel.
Proven Performance in HiB Silicon Steel
ASCON’s pickling line side trimmer has been deployed in projects trimming 1.2–3.0 mm thick HiB silicon steel. HiB silicon steel has high silicon content and high brittleness, making it extremely sensitive to edge micro-cracks. ASCON’s side trimmer maintains consistent gap and overlap throughout the coil, ensuring uniform edge quality from head to tail, preventing micro-cracks from propagating during subsequent cold rolling and annealing, and protecting magnetic properties.
Flexible Configurations, Easy Integration
ASCON offers single-tower, double-tower, and turret-type configurations, and can integrate with scrap choppers, pinch rolls, strip guiding, and scrap conveying systems. The equipment can connect to the line control system for width setting, shear parameter adjustment, and operating status monitoring. ASCON can select and customize the side trimmer according to the specific parameters of the user’s pickling line.
